人物经历主要从事中生代软体动物门双壳纲的古生物学、地层学、古地理学、湖泊系统和青藏高原的地质演化研究。共发表论文93篇(其中SCI收录34篇,OPCI收录6篇,CSCD收录20篇),专著(主编)6部,翻译、科普和序文17篇,非公开发表的研究技术报告和论文5篇(部)。先后获中科院自然科学二等奖两项。目前,正主持国际地质对比计划IGCP506项目(海相与非海相侏罗系:全球对比和重大地质事件)、中国东北地区早白垩世湖泊生态系统的重建、青藏高原中生代双壳类和古地理、中国各门类化石系统总结与志书编研等项目。1997、1998、2001、2005和2006年分别获得“中国科学院野外科考先进个人”、“第三届江苏省优秀科技工作者”、“江苏省有突出贡献的中青年专家”、“全国优秀科技工作者”和“江苏省先进工作者”称号。现任中国古生物学会理事长、全国地层委员会副秘书长、国际地球对比计划IGCP506项目(Marine and non-marine Jurassic: Global Correlation and Major Geological Events)的负责人,大陆钻探计划美国科罗拉多高原钻探项目研讨会(ICDP Workshop on the Colorado Plateau Coring Project: 100 Million Years of Climatic, Tectonic, and Biotic Evolution in Continental Cores)召集人之一、国际侏罗系分会副主席、《地层学杂志》共同主编、New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science副主编、Geoheritage编委等。
